OVERVIEW

The storytelling is non-linear, surreal, with varying points of view. Crumbling architecture and vacant buildings in a once prosperous town in staid New England. The underbelly of quaint.

Problems of our Democracy unfold through the eyes and emotions of a recurring set of oddball characters: smugglers, mental health workers and clients, crooks, contractors, real estate developers, and politicians.

Unlikely romances flourish, flounder, rebound, and deepen. The way we do business in our capitalism, both legally and illegally, is a central theme. There are many forms of currency.

“The Sweet Little Scam” -- the pilot episode from which the other episodes are born -- is the story of how charismatic smuggler, GRANT WINTERS, 48, falls in love with DR. ROSE STERN, 48, Chief of Psychiatric Medicine at State run mental health facility: Oceanside Institute.

Grant turns his back on crooked developers and helps Dr. Rose seize old files which can turn the entire Oceanside Institute campus into one big crime scene, preventing its sale and subdivision.

When do we hide to protect our fragile emotions?

How do we treat our afflictions?

Through the three major story lines and some lesser ones, the series asks a big question: what is our American reality? A roiling stew of mixed perspectives? Is there one, unifying value which liberates individuals or confines them? What happens to people’s judgment when they’re cornered?

What is the cost of personal freedom? Is freedom everything it’s cracked up to be? How can human beings be free from the arcane mysteries of the heart, from blunders of the past, from the demands of a chaotic future?
